PAL: release: 21st May 1999
JP release: 30th July 1999

Tumblr media
Lode Runner is a long-going puzzle series that still has the odd release now, although most seem to be updated version of the original. The N64 version brought the franchise into 3D, but decided to stay true to its roots and just add an extra dimension to it. It got some middling reviews or doing so, but I think it worked out well.
Tumblr media
The basic concept of Lode runner is that there are blocks that temporarily vanish when you shoot them, but you can only fire your gun in a downwards diagonal. You can also only jump down where there are arrows. The objective of each level is to collect gold and reach the end of the level to be transported to the next. Throughout the game, you’ll encounter deadly monks, bombs and special blocks.
Tumblr media
It is, however, a little bit too east to mess up and get stuck, having to restart the entire level. This is more of an issue if it happens at the end of a particularly long level. There are also other things to find, such as gems to unlock bonus levels, extra lives and keys to unlock the next world.
I can see where reviewers of the time are coming from – people expect big adventures from high priced games, rather than a nice, simple puzzler. But these kinds of games can get a bit more time to shine now, and this would be a nice digital game now.
Those of you that remember the original Lode Runner will find that, despite the polygon-filled graphical flourishes, this is pretty much the same game that was first seen well over a decade ago. The rest of us, however, may wish to be distracted momentarily by an absorbing little puzzle game that still charms through an intriguing, time-defying premise.
- Jes Bickham, N64 Magazine #29
Remake or Remaster?
An updated version (perhaps with undo/rewind features) would be nice.
Official Ways to get the game

not vintage but vintage-adjacent: a knockoff Gameboy (FC Retro 800-in-1)
Other day at the thrift a 500-in-1 game unit that looked vaguely like a Nintendo Gameboy showed up. Not sure if anyone bought it because once it came out of the case ($15 originally, $5 a week later) it was missing its battery, battery cover, and second controller (which is actually still on the shelf nearly a month later for $5). Curious, I went online to Amazon and bought myself a brand new one, this one with 800 games. And Imma tell you about it. [give a rat’s ass? click. do not? scroll.]
The listings were clear that there would be duplicate games, but that’s not unusual.
Tumblr media
So a week later this arrived. Amused by the PlayStation button symbols and the Chinglish. For the record, the description under my pinky (”With powerful rechargeable battery pack, includes an AC adapter and a lithium-ion rechargeable battery, 6 hours of continues game play”) is inaccurate; the battery life is closer to 2, as many reviewers online pointed out.
Tumblr media
I was amused how the online listings for these devices would change the names of the games to evade Nintendo’s sniffers, but then they put Mario in the advertising and Super Mario Brothers as the start screen.
Tumblr media
Indeed there are 800 games listed, NES titles rather than Gameboy, and in playing a few I found duplicates, such as “Deflower” is Lode Runner with edited graphics and “Button Mushroom” is Super Mario Brothers unadulterated. There’s a controller which plugs into the top of the handheld and looks a lot like a NES D-pad, but it is only useable as Player 2... and with a cord of about two feet, you aren’t going to be maintaining a Covid-safe distance.
Tumblr media
And the A/V cable that comes with it so you can play it on a television instead of its 3″ screen is about a foot long, and the RCA jacks on my TV are in the back, therefore I had to resort to plugging it into the VCR’s frontside jacks... as you do.
Tumblr media
As a demonstration for y’all, let’s pop over to game 091: Arkanoid, my favorite take on Breakout. (And no, this does not contain Arkanoid II: Revenge of Doh.) Pretty good rendition. Playable with the arrow pad, sure, but definitely not as steerable as with the arcade’s spinner or even home systems’ joysticks.
Tumblr media
For the record, Super Mario Bros is kind of unplayable despite the hype, because it runs at about 1.50x - 1.75x normal speed and jumping high enough to hit blocks seems to be a trick rather than a given. Anyhow, I am happy with my $15 purchase, since now I can play a lot of NES games -- if I can find them on the menu, it’s mostly but not entirely alphabetic -- wherever, whenever.
And for some reason, Pac-Man is the Russian-language release.
With that number of games (and copyrights be damnèd!) you’d expect to find more original titles you might be looking for and fewer duplicates with evasive names, but it’s still a pretty good showing, and despite this seeming a bit flimsy the game unit is actually pretty solid. Now if only the battery inside lasted longer than it takes to charge, that’d be cool... but recognising that it’s a standard size, a BL-5C such as found in Nokia phones, you could conceivably replace the 1020mAh battery inside with a 1200mAh to 2450mAh battery from eBay.

Retro Roulette #94: Lode Runner 3-D (N64, 1999)
You know those times when you just have to run a lode?
Tumblr media
Yeah, me either. Lode Runner 3-D is a puzzle platform game, and part of a well-regarded series that dates back to 1983. The original, which was a hit on the Apple II and other early computers, was among the first games to have a built-in level editor, which is always a good feature to have, right?
Tumblr media
Hmm. Anyway, if you’ve played a Lode Runner game before, this will feel reasonably familiar. If you haven’t, it works like this - in each level, you need to collect a sufficient amount of coins and then reach an exit, all while avoiding bad guys and removing blocks and other obstacles. Each level is essentially its own little puzzle (or series of puzzles, as they grow more and more complex), and timing and sequencing are always very important. For instance, you will very often need to destroy blocks, but those can only be destroyed by either a bomb (which you don’t always have) or if there is nothing on top of it and you are both above and next to it. That’s a weird sentence, so here’s an example:
Tumblr media
In the image above, if I destroy the closest block to me and then drop down, I would then be stuck - I can’t destroy the block that would be next to me, and that block is above the one I could otherwise destroy. Therefore, the correct sequence is to destroy the top right block while standing on the top left block, then destroying the top left block while standing on the ramp, and then dropping down and destroying the bottom block to move on. The blocks respawn after a few seconds, so all of this needs to be done rather quickly. This sort of thinking ahead and ensuring that you don’t screw yourself over is pretty interesting, and is paramount throughout the game.
There are 100 levels to play through, and they get tricky very quickly. Eventually more enemies, tiers of puzzles, and other things that can screw you over are added to the mix. There can be a serious amount of trial and error, which can get frustrating at times. The game’s controls are acceptable, but there are definitely times when I wish they were tighter (and in a puzzle game, To make matters a tad more frustrating, as is the case with a lot of early 3D games, the graphics are muddy enough that it’s often hard to see everything you ideally need to see. Thankfully, there are some okay camera controls if you need them.
Tumblr media
Despite having its share of frustrations, I really quite enjoyed Lode Runner 64. I do tend to enjoy puzzle platformers in general, but this one is decently well-designed and offers an enjoyable challenge that will keep players busy for a good while. If you’re into this sort of game, it’s probably worth tracking down. A loose cart goes for around 10 bucks. Games in the series are still being made, with the most recent being PC/Mac/Switch game Lode Runner Legacy. That one, delightfully, mimics the visuals of the original:
Tumblr media
Big Bang Software, the company behind Lode Runner 64, has a surprisingly brief history. They worked on a PS1 version of Star Wars: Dark Forces, the 32X port of Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure, and...not much else. The studio’s head, Scott Tsumura, is a bit more notable however. In addition to working on the original Lode Runner and other early classics including Moon Patrol and Spelunker, Tsumura was also a developer on more recent gems like Pokemon Puzzle League and WaveRace: Blue Storm.
Tumblr media
Oh, and your guy’s name is Jake Peril. Jake Peril! That’s worth a couple of bucks on its own. Can’t believe I almost forgot that.
The drive to 100 Retro Roulettes continues next week, with a 16-bit follow up to an NES game I reviewed just a few weeks ago. I will see you then!

Note
1, 2, 3, 15, 32, 36, and 72 for the gaming asks~
Thank you for sending! ~
1. First console you’ve ever owned?
The first one I owned that was 100% mine was this sick teal Gameboy Color I got for Christmas when I was 5 or 6 :D
2. First game you played?
God this one is hard cause I have super vague memories of really old computer games and I don’t know what really came first. Might have been like… Lode Runner or something like that? There was also like this maze game that was on a *super* ancient computer but fuck if I remember the name. There was a mouse in it I think? @mistressofmuses might remember it.
3. Favorite childhood game?
I fucking loved Sim Ant, which was made by the creators of a bunch of games including The Sims? But Sim Ant was like, a surprisingly complex RTS ant colony simulator. The main goal of the game was to build an ant empire and take over a dude’s yard and house and chase him out, but there was so much more you could do. It was a great game.
15. Favorite animal in a video game?
Does Amaterasu in Okami count. Cause if so Amaterasu in Okami. (Fuck I love that game so much).
32. Do you cosplay?
Not really. I did cosplay as Phi from Zero Escape one year but I don’t really have the motivation to do it. Big props to people who do– there are some real excellent costumes. I might try to do like, a New Vegas cosplay some year. Who knows.
36. Best antagonist?
This is so hard. This is so hard? I like games where the main antagonist isn’t really evil and has interesting motivations. I think Undertale and Persona 5 did a good job with that. For actual evil antags, I thought both Andrew Ryan and Fontaine/Atlas in Bioshock were fascinating. Does Akane in 999 count??? God I feel like I’m missing someone or something obvious but this is a tough question for me.
72. Have any guilty pleasure games?
I’m in a WoW raiding guild. We meet twice a week. Of course I do.
